"We feel that the real origins of Track
and Field in America are our school youth programs. We
want to record some of the High School coaches and their
athletes. These are, of course,
great athletes who are 'naturals'. Amy Acuff, the high
jumping Texan, was self-taught in high school, using books and
tapes. She called herself the 'mail order' high jumper.
We hope that this small body of work
will simulate more extensive
research on the contribution of school and club programs to
American Track and Field."
